Call for Papers

We are delighted to announce that the 13th International Conference of the Society for Emblem Studies will take place 28 July – 2 August, 2025 at the University of Vienna. We invite papers and panels on any aspect of emblem studies and in line with the Janus emblem of our conference (PROSPECTAT ET RESPECTAT) we especially welcome those that address the following:

  • Pre- and/or Proto-Emblematics;
  • History of Emblem Studies and Historical Collectors/Collections of Emblem books;
  • Emblem Theory Then and Now;
  • Emblem Studies in the Age of Digital Humanities;
  • Emblems on the Periphery (e.g. in the Eastern territories of the former Habsburg monarchy);
  • Emblems on War and Peace (e.g. historical peace treaties as emblematic occasions);
  • Emblems and Propaganda: Devices, Medals, Jetons
  • Applied Emblems: Discovery and Restoration of Emblematic Cycles, Inventories. 

Presentations (in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish) should not exceed 20 minutes. Proposals (title + abstract, max. 250 words), including a CV, should be sent to emblem.klassischephilologie@univie.ac.at by December 31, 2024.

Panels should ordinarily include no more than three speakers. Please submit a short session title, a description of the panel (max. 200 words), an abstract (max. 250 words) for each of its papers, CV + email address of the speakers.
