Preliminary program (Still in development stages!)
We are pleased to inform that the registration process for the 13th International Conference of the Society for Emblem Studies PROSPICIT ET RESPICIT is open. The Conference will be held at the University of Vienna, July 28 – August 2, 2025.
We received proposals from East and West, South and North, covering various topics of emblem studies. There will be about 80 papers in four parallel sections as well as six plenaries including a Grete Lesky Memorial Lecture.
The programme will include evening visits to the imperial crypt at the Capucins‘ (Monday, 28 July), the Old Town hall (Tuesday, 29 July), the KHM coin cabinet (Thursday, 31 July). Optional visits will be offered to the National Library and the old sacristy of the church „am Hof“ (emblems celebrating the holy eucharist).

The excursion on Wednesday, 30 July 2025, will take us to two emblematic sites in the Weinviertel region of northern Lower Austria: The castle chaple of Dürnkrut with marouflages modelled on Hermann Hugo’s Pia desideria and Benedictus van Haeftens’s Schola cordis and the wine-town Retz with its Sgraffito-house and library emblems in the Dominican monastery.

The Conference Dinner will take place on Friday, 1 August 2025, at a typical Viennese Heurigen.
For those who stay until Saturday, 2 August, a visit to Klosterneuburg (emblems in the imperial rooms of Charles VI and Elisabeth Christine; medals collection) will be organized.
The regular period for registration will be open until 15 May 2025. We kindly ask you to complete your registration as soon as possible.
If you are planning to deliver a paper, you have to register as a speaker. If you are a member of the Society for Emblem Studies, you should select the option SES Member speaker, which means a reduced fee.
While online participation is possible in exceptional cases, we strongly encourage onsite presentations. Speakers who wish to present online are kindly asked to contact the organizing team (Doris Vickers – doris.vickers@univie.ac.at and Elisabeth Klecker – elisabeth.klecker@univie.ac.at) before registering.
We look forward to welcoming you in Vienna!
